Description
This book is the second in a series of interactive texts aimed at furthering students’ knowledge of sonoanatomy for regional anesthesia. Our first text Fundamentals of Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia: an interactive guide was for students new to ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. Topics covered in the first text included ultrasound physics, how to operate an ultrasound machine, procedure setup, transducer manipulation, and how to guide needles to targets using ultrasound. The remaining chapters covered the sonoanatomy of the groin and femoral nerve, the posterior thigh and sciatic nerve, and the brachial plexus. All of these concepts are considered core topics for ultrasound guided regional anesthesia.
This text introduces new topics for students wishing to deepen their understanding of sonoanatomy and covers the brachial plexus in the infraclavicular and axillary regions, the sonoanatomy of the thoracic and lumbar spine for neuraxial anesthesia and paravertebral blockade, the transversus abdominal plane, and advanced sonoanatomy of the neck. We differ from other traditional regional anesthesia textbooks that describe the indications, contraindications and technique for each block. As in the first text, our focus is on sonoanatomy. We use interactive images and video clips extensively to help students develop a deep understanding of the anatomy and sonoanatomy for each region. Although we provide a brief discussion of the performance of blocks, our focus is helping learners become experts on sonoanatomy. When we describe the technical aspects of how to perform a block, it is in the context of how the anatomy might play a role in how different techniques are performed or how the sonoanatomy would appear for that approach.
Our first text was met with enthusiasm and we hope you find this second installment to be equally useful. We are particularly excited about the chapter contributions made by several internationally recognized experts in regional anesthesia.
